Olympe de Gouges – en bortglömd revolutionär - Röda Rummet

In 1791 she wrote the following declaration, directly challenging the inferiority presumed of women by the Declaration of the Rights of Man. Her attempts to push this idea lead to her being charged with treason during the rule of the National Convention. By 1791, the French Revolution was well underway– a development De Gouges initially welcomed. But she found deep flaws in 1789’s Déclaration des Droits de l’Homme et du Citoyen, ( Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen ), France’s first major blueprint for a democratic bill of rights. Considered a feminist pioneer, de Gouges was an advocate of women's rights. Her most famous work was The Declaration of the Rights of Woman, (1791). Even in revolutionary France, feminist ideas were considered radical.
